In this article, I am going to review the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light from BESTVA.

Trust me, growing houseplants with little light can be difficult. I have been living in Ireland for the best part of the last 7 years and have recently relocated to Switzerland.

Neither of these two countries is known for its tropical climate. I, therefore, began supporting my growing houseplant collection with grow lights.

My goal always was and still is to provide optimal growing conditions for my rare Monstera and Philodendron plants.

There is nothing better than faster growth and bigger leaves on your previous plants.

I first used grow lights in the wintertime to adjust for the lack of light in this season. This was a huge success and my plants kept on growing during wintertime and I saw new leaves popping up all the time.

I soon began using grow light not only in winter but also in spring and autumn. I later also bought an indoor grow tent because I wanted an environment that was easier to control in terms of temperature, humidity, and of course lighting.

Before that, I was using IKEA Växer LED grow lights as well as the Jungle Dawn LED bar. Both of these lights worked for my houseplants. But as stated earlier I wanted to max out the growth potential of my plants and I certainly wasn’t doing this with these lights.

Verdict

The BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light is a very capable full-spectrum grow light that is suitable to meet the light requirements of all your houseplants. The design and build quality and the WLAN/app function in combination with the high light intensity (15’600 lux / 1449 FC)  make this LED light a great buy.

Powerful grow light

The most important aspect of a grow light is how well it is growing your plants.

The BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light is using 448 pieces of Samsung LM301 Diodes.

Samsung produces some of the best and most effective LEDs on the market and these particular LEDs have a Luminous efficacy of 220 220 lm/W.

I have used the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light for the past 4 weeks and would like to give you a growth update.

Most of my aroid plants in the grow tent are currently working on a new leaf. This is fantastic news!

Especially the Monstera Thai Constellation can take months and months without doing anything. But it seems that it reacted extremely well to the grow light.

One of my Thai Constellations has just produced the biggest leaf ever and the other one is pushing one out as we speak. 

I am using an ebb and flow system where the plants are in leca and are watered automatically 4 times a day. There is a reservoir with a nutrient solution underneath and the plants are watered for 5 minutes by a pump 4 times a day and then the water flows into the water reservoir again.

So in terms of watering and nutrients, everything was already optimal, but I was lacking a proper grow light to lighten up the 50-60 plants I currently have in my grow tent.

Parts of my grow tent that is roughly 2×3 feet were rather dark before using the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light. From the 5 grow lights I have been using previously I have been able to retire 3 as the BESTVA light is sufficient to light the whole grow tent.

Of course, I also took my own measurements. As I do not have a par meter, I measured the LUX and PAR the grow light is emitting.

LUX is a mere indicator of the brightness a grow light is emitting.

I am using the free version of the Photone App on my iPhone to measure the brightness of the light.

When measuring direct sunlight shining through the windows onto the leaves of my houseplants, I usually get a value of around 40’000 lux.

With the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow I measured 15’600 lux (1449 FC) at the center of the grow light and 12’800 lux (1189 FC) at the edges of the grow light at a distance of 18 inches (47cm).

12’800 lux is roughly 1/3 what I would get on a very bright day with direct sunlight shining through the windows.

The light energy according to BESTVA is 500–599nm. The grow light is highly efficient due to the use of red and blue Samsung LEDs emitting a natural full-spectrum light.

Not bad if you consider that the light intensity from the sun varies throughout the day and you can set the grow light on a constant 12 hours on/off cycle.

None of my other grow lights, such as the IKEA Växer lights, the Jungle Dawn LED Bar 22w, or the Roleado 75W grow light came anywhere close. 

The highest level of light I was able to measure from a distance of 18 inches (47cm) for these lights was 4000 lux (37 FC or foot-candles).

 

 

Full Spectrum

I am growing houseplants because I love looking at them, period. At the beginning of my houseplant journey, I used a couple of cheap grow lights emitting only red and blue light.

This red and blue wavelength is said to be more energy-efficient and focuses on the spectrum where photosynthesis peaks.

But based on my personal experience, nothing beats nature. Since the sunlight is considered full-spectrum light, I assume that a full-spectrum grow light is the best for my plants.

Apart from that, blue and red grow lights make plants look ugly and your room also just looks off.

 

 

Dimmable

I first had the grow light at 100% but then soon dimmed it to 50%. Different growth stages and different distances from the canopy to the grow light might ask for different light intensities.

It is therefore a great feature that you can adjust the intensity by dimming the light.

There is a toggle on the grow light itself and it can also be dimmed by the app.

When controlling the grow light using the app you just need to make sure that you set the toggle on the grow light to the app or else it won’t work.

 

 

App-Controlled

I have always wanted a grow light that I can control using an app. Because I like to travel and am often away for several days, app control is a lifesaver.

I have had to rely on mechanical outlet timers that are not precise and are a hassle to set. All of this is now a thing of the past as I was easily able to set a 12 hours on and 12 hours off schedule that works like a charm.

 

 

Easy to Setup

Although the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light is  18.9lb (8.6 kg), I had no problems setting it up and mounting it on the ceiling of my grow tent.

It came with all the necessary nooks and crannies to mount it in my grow tent.

The grow light comes with 4 hangers that you can adjust in height. For my other grow light I had to buy them separately.

 

 

Foldable

This is the first foldable grow light I have ever seen and I have to say it is a great idea. Not only is it easier to ship and came in one piece. It is also much easier to maneuver and mount.

Without this feature, I would not have been able to set it up alone for sure.

 

 

Quiet

I can hardly hear the grow light when it is on. There are a lot of grow lights that when you read the reviews say they are quite loud. Without seeing the light of this grow light I wouldn’t know whether it is on or off. And this is a good thing. Very quiet.

 

Build Quality

This grow light is very well built. Very sturdy using quality materials. The moment you lay your hands on it you realize that this is a quality product. This is very unlike some of the other cheaper grow lights I own where you are waiting for the day they fall apart.

This light is built to last.

 

 

Packaging

The grow light was packaged very well and arrived in a pristine condition. It didn’t move an inch in its box. I also appreciated that there were very very few pieces that had to be assembled. The unique foldable design makes it possible to ship it that way.

 

 

 

IP65 Waterproof

I am using a humidifier in my grow tent and aim for the humidity of 80% and more. 

So water droplets are a common occurrence and any part exposed to these conditions is an additional risk and will shorten the lifespan of the product used.

Therefore it is great that the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED is IP65 tested and can be used under humid conditions (air humidity).

 

 

Support

The support is great. I had one issue where I wasn’t able to use the grow light with the app. It turned out that I had overseen one of the things I needed to do to set the grow light on app mode (flip a switch on the grow light).

 

 

Negatives in Detail

 

Thermal emittance

I personally liked the fact that this grow light gets quite hot and can increase the room temperature in the grow tent by several degrees. The reason is that I am relying on additional heat sources in the grow tent in winter. spring and autumn.

Spring, autumn, and winter get quite cold where I live and I am using a greenhouse heater for these 3 seasons. 

When using the BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light I need to heat less. However, I will have to account for this in summer when it gets warmer and it is certainly something that needs to be taken into account.

 

 

Leaflet

The leaflet is illustrated with a lot of pictures and goes into every part from setting up the grow light, using it, as well as how to control it via the app.

Whilst the leaflet is generally great, what can be improved further is the translation as there are small grammatical errors here and there.

 

 

Conclusion About BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light – The Results

The BESTVA BAT W400 Dimmable LED Grow Light is a fantastic choice for anyone serious about their houseplant collection.

It is more than sufficient to lighten up an area of 4×4 feet. I had in fact had to dim the grow light to 50% as the light emittance is just so powerful.

 

Further, it is a great grow light to grow Monstera, Philodendron, and other houseplants. I observed quick growth and bigger foliage using it.

The best feature for me personally that sets this grow light apart from other grow lights is the unique foldable design in combination with the app control.

 

Despite the more than 18lb (8kg), it was able to set it up alone by hanging one half of the grow light first before attaching the other half to the grow tent. It also was nice that it comes with all the handles necessary to hang it to your ceiling, grow tent or rack.

Also using the hangers it comes with, it is very easy to adjust the distance to your plants.

 

The app control is great as well. The grow light was very easy to connect to my WLAN. I then downloaded the Tuya Smart App from the App Store and set everything up within minutes.

Now I have a grow light that I can dim, schedule, time, and turn on and off using an app. Before I used these antiquated mechanical outlet timers. Now I do all of the scheduling using the app. I set my grow light on a 12 hours on and 12 hours off schedule.
