Proper fertilization is necessary if you want lush, green, and thick Bermuda grass on your lawn.

Liquid Lawn Food by Simple Lawn Solutions – Best Overall Bermuda Grass Fertilizer

This liquid fertilizer is a complete lawn food for any grass and is developed with 25 years of experience in the turf industry.

It has high nitrogen content, and the overall NPK ratio is 16-4-8. This advanced formula perfectly blends macronutrients, fish, and seaweed.

This fertilizer classifies as a quick-release nitrogen fertilizer. The nitrogen will enhance the green color; phosphorus will strengthen the root system, whereas the potassium will boost the hardiness of the turf.

This liquid food can be used for Bermuda grass lawns in both spring and summer. The 32-ounce container can treat up to 3200 sq ft of grass.

This fertilizer acts as plant food for your Bermuda grass, repairs the lawn, and treats nutrient deficiencies.

You will notice a change in the color and growth of the Bermuda grass as the drought and disease resistance improves.

It has a sprayer attached to the container for instant and easy application. It supports both below and above-ground growth of Bermuda grass as it promotes vigorous root growth.

But to ensure the fertilizer is absorbed properly, water your lawn adequately. Avoid applying it to dry lawn unless you are expecting rain.

I prefer liquid fertilizer for Bermuda grass on my lawn because it travels better through the soil and sticks to grass, benefiting both foliar and soil application.

This fertilizer started showing results on my lawn within one week, so it is a fast-acting formula for grass growth.

If you have bare spots on your lawn, this liquid fertilizer will soon fill these spots with beautiful green Bermuda grass.

For application, attach the hose sprayer to the pump and spray the concentrated solution directly on the grass.

Monthly application in spring and summer will strengthen the grass to withstand heat and lack of water on hot summer days.

Pros

  • It contains high-quality liquid nutrients for nourishment
  • It can also be used for other types of grass
  • Promotes root growth
  • Contains feed grade liquid ingredients and organic kelp
  • Suitable for commercial application
  • Comes with a hose sprayer
  • Has no harmful chemicals that might burn the lawn grass

Cons

  • Some buyers have complained about the dispenser
  • Overfertilization can burn the Bermuda grass

Water Soluble Lawn Food by Miracle-Gro – Best Granular Bermuda Grass Fertilizer

Miracle-Gro produces among the best fertilizers for plants and vegetables, but did you know that they have designed fertilizers for grass and lawns as well?

This granular fertilizer is a fast way to have a thick green lawn because of its high nitrogen content and water solubility.

With NPK of 30-0-6, it is designed for all types of lawn grass, including Bermuda grass.

You can choose the fertilization technique because this lawn food can be applied via the soil or foliage.

The granules take 2 weeks or less to dissolve in the soil and start acting.

If you have a small area to cover, I highly recommend foliar application since it’s environment-friendly.

But diluting and applying the fertilizer to soil also gives the same results if the fertilizer is distributed evenly.

What differentiates this lawn food is the high nitrogen content that ensures deep green Bermuda grass.

With regular application, you will soon have a soft and lush green carpet of Bermuda grass.

Although it is a fast-acting fertilizer for Bermuda grass, you can also use it for other types of turfgrasses. If you use it in a hot climate, water the grass well after application.

Since it’s a gentle fertilizer, you can apply it before or after planting grass seeds.

The 5 Lb. package can easily feed 7200 sq ft. The application should be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks for fast results.

I would suggest applying it with the Miracle-Gro Garden Feeder, but you can also use a simple watering can.

Pros

  • Can be used at any time in the growing season and at any stage of growth
  • Contains chelated iron
  • Will not burn the grass or lawn if used as directed
  • Gives instant results within 2 weeks or less

Cons

  • Not effective on dead grass
  • Does not come with the sprayer

Organic fertilizers are designed to treat and repair both the plants or, in this case, grass and soil for long-term benefits. They fuel the microbial activity in the soil.

You can take care of the microorganisms living in the soil with this fertilizer, and these organisms will eventually do everything required for lush green Bermuda grass.

This fertilizer is designed to revitalize your Bermuda grass lawn within 3-5 days, right!

It repairs your thin, boring lawn turf by strengthening the root system and new seeding. It is suitable for all types of cool and warm-season grasses.

It’s worth mentioning that this is an organic product with real plant ingredients and no manure odor.

The organic content in this lawn fertilizer improves the microbial activity in the lawn soil.

The manufacturer updated the formula, and the new version has organic ingredients like Soybean Meal, Alfalfa Meal, Blood Meal, Feather Meal, Molasses, etc.

It prepares your lawn to fight stress conditions such as heat, cold, and drought. A single 25 lb. package will feed 6250 sq ft of lawn area. This fertilizer can easily provide year-round coverage for your lawn in all four seasons.

The mild NPK ratio of 9-0-2 ensures that it never burns your Bermuda grass, but at the same time, it can help the grass grow thick and green. It is safe to use in the winter during long growth cycles of grass.

The organic formula will break down the soil structure for better fertilizer penetration, and the nutrients are released over time.

The Bermuda grass will have deeper roots that, in return, help in better water and nutrient absorption.

The manufacturer offers a 30-day warranty and a 1-year return policy for this product.

The NPK ratio of 10-0-2 and other plant-based nutrients like dried grains and soya beans will never burn the Bermuda grass if used properly.

This product has zero phosphates to comply with environmental regulations. It is safe to use around pets and kids, so your lawn is safe to play immediately after application. The 20 lb. package will feed 5000 sq ft of Bermuda grass lawn.

Before applying this fertilizer, ensure heavy rainfall is not expected and the temperature is above 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 degrees Celsius).

The application is easy, spread the fertilizer evenly throughout your lawn and water it to activate the fertilizer. I have noticed that with consistent feeding, the Bermuda grass will grow healthy and require less watering.

Pros

  • Has no harmful chemicals or biosolids

Turf Builder WinterGuard by Scotts – Best for Budget Bermuda Grass Fertilizer

You can treat 5000 sq ft of Bermuda grass for just US $ 35.56. This fertilizer is a two-in-one option: it feeds the grass and controls weeds.

The new formula for this fertilizer is more effective against dandelion and clover control. It will suppress all the weeds you see and even the ones hidden under the grass.

I would highly recommend this fertilizer for Bermuda grass if you have weed issues on your lawn.

It prepares the Bermuda grass for the next season by strengthening the roots. It will also enhance the nutrient and water absorption ability of the grass.

The NPK ratio for this fertilizer is 28-0-6. It is important to apply this fertilizer to wet Bermuda grass so that weed killers can adhere to the weeds.

Pros

Milorganite Organic Nitrogen Fertilizer – Best Slow-Release Bermuda Grass Fertilizer

This fertilizer is a proven choice for lawn and grass for over 90 years. It is essentially a slow-release organic lawn fertilizer that is rich in iron and heat-dried microbes.

This non-leaching and salt-free product has long-lasting effects, but for Bermuda grass, it helps give the beautiful green color. The 36 lb package will cover a 2500 sq ft area.

The NPK ratio for this nitrogen-rich fertilizer is 6-4-0. In my opinion, this is a perfect granular fertilizer for slow–release feeding of lawns and gardens.

The 4% iron is the secret ingredient of this organic formula as it promotes the deep green color of Bermuda grass.

I would not recommend using it in the early stages of growth or on young grass because it lacks nutrients for root development, so you might end up with a weak root system.

This fertilizer has a strong odor, but according to the manufacturer, it will faint after watering. But the smell has an added benefit; it acts as a repellent and protects your lawn from deer, rabbits, and bugs.

Ideally, you should fertilize your lawn 4 times during the year. If you plan to fertilize your lawn only once, then fall is the best time.

This non-burning fertilizer has been used for decades, and it is designed to avoid stressing the plants.

Last year I applied this organic fertilizer to dying grass in my lawn, and soon it started greening.

I love using this fertilizer in my lawn because it will never burn Bermuda grass or any other type of grass even after overfeeding. But as a safe practice, always avoid over-fertilizing.

Pros

  • Organic formula safe for use around pets and children
  • Comes with protective gloves
  • Acts as repellent
  • Promotes the healthy growth of other flowers, shrubs, and trees in your garden or lawn
  • The slow-release formula reduces mowing and water consumption in the lawn
  • Can be used as winterizer
  • A single application will last for up to 10 weeks
  • Can be applied to a dormant Bermuda grass lawn

Cons

  • Only for well-established Bermuda grass
  • Cannot be used in areas with droughts
  • Has an intense smell

Slow-Release Fertilizer

Slow-release fertilizers are a good choice for lawn grass such as Bermuda grass because they will continue feeding throughout the season.

Generally, liquid fertilizers offer quick results, but granular slow-release fertilizers ensure long-lasting results.

Make sure you sweep the excess granules from the driveway or porch.

According to Texas A&M University you can start fertilizing Bermuda grass once it is green.

Avoid fertilizing when there is still frost, especially fertilizing with Nitrogen (N) heavy fertilizers is not a good idea.

It is advised to test your soil before starting to fertilize your lawn.

Only then will you know the NPK value of your current soil.

This will help you to determine what needs to be added in addition and what levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are already present.

It is advised to add 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet every 4-6 weeks and then 1 1/2 pounds of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer every 8-10 weeks.

To calculate the amount needed for your lawn, which equals 1 pound per 1,000 square feet, you can use a simple formula.

First divide the first number in the NPK ratio through 100.

If you use an 18-6-12 fertilizer, divide the first number 18 by 100.

100 / 18 = 5,6

Once you know this, you need to know your lawn’s square feet.

Let’s assume it is 3,000 square feet.

In this case, you would calculate (5,000 / 3,000)  x 5,6 = 9.33 pounds of fertilizer are needed for a 3,000 square feet lawn of Bermuda grass.

Credits for the formula go to A&M University.

Why Should You Fertilize Bermuda Grass?

The thickness of the Turf

I like growing Bermuda grass because it grows quickly and covers my lawn with thick turf. But unfed Bermuda grass will not achieve the desired turf thickness.

A good Bermuda grass fertilizer has both nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen helps the grass develop green leaf blades that increase the turf thickness, and phosphorus is needed for strong roots.

The thick turf is beautiful to look at chokes the weeds in your lawn and helps the grass tolerate foot traffic.

Color

With the right fertilizer, you will have beautiful, deep green Bermuda grass. Lack of nutrients or poor feeding will result in a brown lawn with damaged Bermuda grass.

Soil

A good quality fertilizer will feed the Bermuda grass and benefit the soil. Organic fertilizers enhance biological activity in the soil as the microorganisms feed on the fertilizer. Fertilizers improve the overall health of your lawn.

Recovering from Disease or Damage

If the Bermuda grass in your lawn has become thin due to disease, damage, or stress, a good fertilizer treatment can help it recover.

Empty spots are filled faster in well-fed lawns.

Easy Lawn Care

The right nutrients will strengthen the Bermuda grass, and you will spend less time caring for your lawn grass. Fertilization improves the absorption ability of the grass, so less water is required, and the grass better absorbs the rainwater.

Nutrients Required for Bermuda Grass

Nitrogen is the most beneficial nutrient for Bermuda grass as it helps the grass develop a green color.

But I recommend amending your garden soil with amendments to enrich the soil and help the fertilizer work better.

Read the NPK ratio to ensure it has essential nutrients for root development since a healthy root system leads to healthy Bermuda grass.

You should start fertilizing Bermuda grass in early spring and continue throughout summer. A general rule for fertilization of Bermuda grass is to add fertilizer only when it’s actively growing.

Why Should You Avoid Feeding Dormant Bermuda Grass?

Fertilizing a dormant Bermuda grass lawn with a quick-release fertilizer will feed the weeds, and they will eventually take over the grass. The most prominent one is crabgrass which spreads very fast and can easily damage Bermuda grass.

Therefore it is best to fertilize Bermuda grass with slow-release granular fertilizers.

Applying fertilizers at the wrong time or too early can burn the Bermuda grass. You will end up wasting most of the fertilizer because, in dormancy, the grass cannot absorb the nutrients.

Fertilizing in winter will break the dormancy and force the Bermuda grass to grow. But it will soon be damaged by the freezing temperatures, and you will end up with no grass in the coming spring.

Fertilization Schedule for Bermuda Grass

Caring for Bermuda grass begins once the seeds are sown. In most cases, you do not need fertilizer for seeds, but if your soil lacks the necessary nutrients, you can opt for starter fertilizer.

This will ensure faster and stronger root and leaf development. Make sure you choose a starter fertilizer that is high in nitrogen but also has a good amount of phosphorus.

If your soil is rich, you can continue the regular feeding schedule that starts in spring when the weather starts getting warm.

Mid-spring: Only begin fertilization when the soil temperature is 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius) or higher. Another hint to start fertilizing is when the Bermuda grass turns green (at least 50%) after the frost.

Mid-summer: After the first application in spring, reapply fertilizer after 2 or 3 months in summer (late June or early July).

Early fall: Reapply fertilizer in August or September. You can use a complete fertilizer or shift to a high potassium fertilizer that has little or no phosphorus in it.

You can also apply a winter fertilizer to help the Bermuda grass grow beautifully in the coming spring season. Avoid feeding drought-stressed grass.

Lawn winterizes are fertilizers used in late fall to help the Bermuda grass store more nutrients to survive the winter. They also encourage thick and green grass after the dormancy is over.

Winterizer should be applied in fall when the grass stops growing, but it’s still green and active in the root zone. Most researchers suggest that the best lawn winterize is rich in nitrogen.

Every 1000 sq ft of Bermuda grass requires 4 or 5 lbs of fertilizer. You can use this number to adjust the quantity of fertilizer for your lawn size.

For concentration or dilutions, follow the instructions on the labels but remember over-fertilizing with a high dose at once does more damage than fertilizing too often.

As a precautionary measure, reduce the application rate to avoid leaching or fertilizer burns.

Overfertilization should be avoided at any cost because it can burn the roots, and the grass will turn brown and dry.

Conclusion Regarding Best Fertilizers for Bermuda Grass

Just like other houseplants, grass also needs some attention and care from you.

The right fertilizer is the secret behind the thick green lawn.

Say no to patchy yellow Bermuda grass by buying the right fertilizer from the list of fertilizers in this guide.

You can choose the best fertilizer for Bermuda grass depending on your budget and convenience to help your lawn stand out.
